What is Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese healing method and body therapy. Shiatsu means “finger pressure” (Shi = finger, Atsu = pressure). Namikoshi Shiatsu was developed in Japan by Tokujiro Namikoshi (1919) and later further refined by his son Toru Namikoshi. Thanks to the work of Tokujiro Namikoshi, this system was officially recognized as a therapy by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Hygiene in 1964. Denis Binks, trained by Tokujiro Namikoshi, opened the first Shiatsu School in Baarn in 1977. At this school I obtained my diploma in 1997. For more information about Shiatsu, see nl.wikipedia.org/shiatsu.
In this Shiatsu system, pressure is applied with thumbs, fingers, and palms along a network of energy pathways (meridians). Muscle force is not used; instead, the therapist uses their own body weight to apply pressure. A Shiatsu therapist works with approximately 700 points spread across the body to stimulate the body’s self-healing ability and restore balance in muscles, connective tissue, joints, and organs. A Shiatsu treatment also calms the autonomic nervous system, reducing stress and restoring energy. The relaxation and relief can last for several hours after the treatment.
Treatment and method:
The first session always begins with an intake interview of about 15 minutes, during which medical history and complaints are discussed. I also observe body posture and movement patterns so the treatment can be tailored to individual needs. Based on this information, a therapeutic treatment plan is created.
Following this discussion, the treatment begins. A typical session involves the client lying on a Japanese mat (futon) or treatment table (which may be heated with an infrared mat), wearing loose, comfortable clothing. Pressure is applied to specific points in the affected area for a certain duration, usually a few seconds. The placement, duration, and depth of pressure are adjusted to stimulate these specific pressure points, helping reduce muscle tension and strengthen the immune system.
The body is treated as a whole—meaning the entire body is addressed. A session typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes. The client may experience some muscle soreness the next day, but tension or chronic pain is usually reduced.
.
Shiatsu therapy can be used for, among other things:
● Back, neck, and shoulder complaints (sciatica, frozen shoulder, RSI)
● Headaches, migraines, and dizziness
● Fatigue, stress, and burnout
● Insomnia
● Digestive issues (stomach and intestinal complaints)
● Hormonal imbalance (menopausal symptoms and menstrual pain)
● Pregnancy support
● Low immunity
● High and low blood pressure
Contraindications:
Fever, acute infections, flu, fractures, open wounds
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments varies per person and depends on the severity of the complaints. In most cases, it is recommended to schedule a treatment weekly or every other week. For acute complaints, a few treatments may already provide sufficient results. For maintenance and prevention, it is generally recommended to undergo a Shiatsu treatment once every six weeks.
Pregnancy Support
Pregnancy is a period of major physical and hormonal changes. Shiatsu can provide support in a safe and natural way and help prepare for childbirth:
● Relief of back, neck, and pelvic complaints
● Promotion of relaxation and sleep
● Reduction of nausea and stress
● Helping the body regain balance
In addition, clients are given simple techniques such as specific pressure points to use at home or during labor in the final phase of pregnancy (from approximately 37 weeks), in consultation with a midwife or medical specialist. Safety always comes first.
These pressure points can help with:
● Preparing the body for childbirth
● Supporting natural contractions

massage therapy
Holistic Massage Therapy
I work from a holistic perspective: the focus is on the complete picture, not just the complaint itself. The goal of this massage is to relax both body and mind on a deep level, to clear your head, and to release physical blockages.
Stress, unresolved emotions and problems, as well as physical trauma—such as a fall or poor posture—can cause tension in the body.
Massage therapy stimulates the body’s self-regulating ability, loosens muscles and joints, helps you achieve mental calm, and allows you to fall asleep faster and more deeply.
Treatment and Method
The first treatment always begins with an intake conversation of approximately 15 minutes, during which your medical history and request for help are discussed: what your needs are and which areas of the body require the most attention. Both physical and stress-related factors are considered. I also assess posture and movement patterns so the treatment can be tailored to your personal needs. Based on this information, a therapeutic treatment plan is created.
Together, we then determine which treatment suits you best at that moment.
A treatment lasts on average 70 minutes, but can be longer if desired.
On the massage table, there is an infrared heating blanket, which helps relax the muscles, relieve pain, improve blood circulation, and provides a pleasant warm sensation.
After the session, there is time to come back to yourself for about 5 minutes and then discuss your experience.

Possible Techniques Used Depending on the Complaint:
● Classic massage
● Acupressure therapy*
● Trigger point therapy*
● Deep tissue massage*
● Segmental connective tissue massage*
● Foot reflexology*
● Energetic massage
● Psoas release*
● Breathing techniques
Acupressure therapy:
This involves applying pressure with thumbs, fingers, and palms to points along energy pathways (meridians). It is based on the same principles as acupuncture, but without needles.
Stretching and mobilization techniques are also used. The flow of energy is restored and brought back into balance.

Trigger Point Therapy:(Various continuing education courses, masterclasses, and webinars completed via: triggerpointcoach.nl)
Trigger points are small, contracted spots in a muscle that can cause pain, both locally and radiating to other parts of the body. Through targeted pressure and techniques, these points are relaxed, reducing pain and improving muscle function. See video explaining trigger points.
Also see the trigger point search engine: pijngids.nl. In this online guide, you can search for pain complaints that may be caused by muscles and connective tissue (fascia).
Deep Tissue Massage:(Various workshops completed with Art Riggs: Rolfing instructor)
This is a deep, firm, and slow technique aimed at releasing adhesions in the connective tissue (fascia) to create space where it feels tight or restricted. Elbows and fists are also used. Little to no oil is applied. The technique promotes good circulation and the removal of waste products, relaxes muscles, and improves posture. Highly effective for painful shoulders/neck and back. It is also used to release (emotional) blockages.
Segmental Connective Tissue Massage:
This technique works on the connective tissue to treat complaints in internal organs, muscles, and joints. Treating the skin zone (the segment) can influence the corresponding organs through methods such as kneading and rolling the skin.
Foot Reflexology:
This is based on the idea that all organs, muscles, and joints are represented in and on the feet.By massaging these reflex zones, you can indirectly influence the corresponding organs and muscles.
Psoas Release:
This treatment focuses on relaxing and lengthening the deep hip flexor muscle (m. iliopsoas) to release physical, emotional, and stress-related tension. It relieves lower back pain, hip complaints, and anxiety, often caused by prolonged sitting or chronic stress.
about
My name is Carolien.
My interest in working with body and mind began in 1990, when I started the four-year training to become a Holistic Massage Therapist at HOLOS.
Soon I felt that I wanted to deepen my knowledge further and learn more about traditional Eastern healing methods.
In 1997, I graduated from the Nippon Nederlandse Shiatsu School following the Namikoshi method in Baarn. This training gave me new insights and techniques. The combination of holistic massage and Shiatsu still forms the foundation of my way of working.
In 2014, I obtained my diploma in Medical Basic Knowledge at Con Amore at HBO level, covering subjects such as anatomy, physiology, and pathology. In addition, I continue to take many advanced courses and workshops to expand my knowledge on topics such as burn-out, osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, frozen shoulder, Shiatsu and pregnancy support, smartphone syndrome, and basic training to become an Orthomolecular Therapist.
Before following this path, I worked for years in the fashion industry and also spent some time abroad (Canada). Ultimately, I felt that my heart was in working with people on a deeper level. I also see this profession as a form of art: the Art of Relaxation. With attention and sensitivity, I aim to bring the body back into balance.
In addition to my work, I enjoy going to Texel to get away from the city, recharge in nature, and spend time by the sea.
Photography is also a great hobby of mine, and I love cooking vegetarian meals and enjoying pure, flavorful dishes.
In my practice, I work calmly and with attention, so that people feel at ease and return home feeling relaxed.
